Zambians have begun voting in a closely watched national election, with President Hakainde Hichilema seeking another term in office and widely expected to retain power.
Voters are choosing the country’s president and members of parliament amid concerns over the economy, rising living costs and unemployment.
Hichilema, who came to power promising economic reforms and improved living conditions, is campaigning on his government’s record and efforts to attract investment.
Opposition parties, meanwhile, have criticised the government over economic pressures and accused it of failing to deliver sufficiently on its promises.
Election officials have urged voters to remain peaceful and respect the electoral process as polling takes place across the country.
The result will determine whether Hichilema secures another mandate and continues his economic programme or whether Zambia enters a new political phase under an opposition government.
