At least 10 people, including senior Lebanese military officers, were killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon despite ongoing ceasefire efforts.
At least 10 people were killed in Israeli attacks across southern Lebanon, including several high-ranking members of the Lebanese army, despite ongoing efforts to maintain a conditional ceasefire between the two countries.
Lebanon’s military confirmed on Saturday that a brigadier general, a captain, and another soldier were killed after an Israeli strike targeted a military vehicle on the Khardali-Nabatieh road in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese army identified the victims as Brigadier General Wassam Sabra, Captain Elie Khoury, and soldier Hussein Ghozal. The attack marked one of the deadliest incidents involving Lebanese military personnel since tensions escalated earlier this year.
In response, the Israeli military stated that the strike occurred within what it described as an “active combat zone.” Israeli officials said movements in the area required prior coordination with Israeli forces and added that the incident was under investigation.
The Lebanese army strongly condemned the strike, accusing Israel of continuing repeated attacks aimed at undermining efforts to reach a political and security solution.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the incident as a serious violation of Lebanese sovereignty and international law. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also condemned the strike, calling it a “heinous crime” and extending condolences to the victims’ families and the Lebanese armed forces.
The armed group Hezbollah also reacted sharply, accusing the Lebanese government of failing to protect the country and criticizing what it described as excessive concessions to international pressure during negotiations.
According to local reports, the latest violence comes only days after Lebanon and Israel agreed to a conditional truce during talks mediated by the United States. However, clashes and military operations have continued in several southern regions despite diplomatic efforts.
Observers note that Lebanese military personnel have increasingly become casualties during the conflict. More than 50 Lebanese soldiers and security personnel have reportedly been killed since fighting intensified earlier this year.
Political analysts say the death of a brigadier general represents a significant escalation and may increase pressure on the Lebanese government to respond more firmly to Israeli military actions.
Residents in southern Lebanon continue to face growing instability as fears rise that the fragile ceasefire could collapse completely if attacks continue.
