British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation nearly two years after leading the Labour Party to a landslide election victory, paving the way for the United Kingdom’s seventh prime minister in the past 10 years.
In an emotional address on Monday, Starmer said he would remain in office until a new Labour leader is chosen. The leadership contest is scheduled to begin on July 9 and conclude before Parliament’s summer recess.
Starmer’s position had been weakened by disappointing local election results and growing discontent within the Labour Party. The pressure intensified following a parliamentary by-election defeat in Makerfield, where Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham secured a decisive victory, ultimately prompting Starmer’s resignation.
