Colombia secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana in Kansas City on Friday.
Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, finishing a cross from substitute Luis Suarez after striker Jhon Cordoba was forced off early through injury.
The South Americans defended their lead with discipline to extend their unbeaten run in the tournament and book a last-16 clash against Switzerland.
Colombia had topped Group K without defeat, finishing ahead of Portugal, Uzbekistan and DR Congo, and continued their impressive form against Ghana.
Luis Diaz came close to doubling the lead on several occasions, including a goal ruled out for offside, while Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced a string of impressive saves to keep his team in the contest.
Despite Ghana’s late efforts, Colombia’s organised defence denied clear scoring opportunities, sealing progression to the knockout stage. Colombia will now face Switzerland in Vancouver for a place in the World Cup quarterfinals.
