Canada Edge South Africa to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Last 16

Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 for the first time in history after defeating South Africa 1-0, thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Stephen Eustaquio.

The Canadian midfielder struck from outside the penalty area in added time, firing a powerful shot beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to settle a tightly contested knockout clash at Los Angeles Stadium.

South Africa, who appeared content to force extra time, pushed forward desperately after conceding but failed to find an equaliser before the final whistle.

Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4 in Houston.

The first half offered few clear-cut chances, although Canada came close through Moise Bombito and Tajon Buchanan, while a penalty appeal involving Richie Laryea was rejected following a VAR review.

After the break, Canada continued to dominate possession and created further opportunities, but South Africa’s defence held firm until Eustaquio’s late strike secured a historic victory.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his players’ determination after the match, while Eustaquio dedicated the memorable win to Canadians, saying belief and teamwork had carried the team into the knockout stage.
