Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel despite a recent U.S.-mediated understanding aimed at reducing tensions. Israel responded with interceptions and warned of further action.
Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah escalated again on Wednesday after rockets were launched from Lebanon into northern Israel, raising concerns over the future of a recently announced U.S.-mediated understanding aimed at limiting cross-border attacks.
According to the Israeli military, two rockets fired from Lebanese territory were intercepted before causing damage inside Israel. Hezbollah later confirmed it had carried out a rocket attack targeting an Israeli military position in the north, marking its first publicly announced strike since Monday.
The latest developments come at a sensitive moment for the region, as diplomatic efforts continue between the United States and Iran to prevent wider conflict. Lebanon has increasingly become a central focus in the crisis, with fears growing that renewed fighting could derail ongoing negotiations.
Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid launching a large-scale military operation in Beirut. Trump also said Hezbollah, through intermediaries, had agreed to avoid further attacks on Israel under the informal understanding.
However, clashes and military activity in southern Lebanon have continued despite those efforts. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on Tuesday that Israel would respond forcefully, including possible strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, if attacks on northern Israeli areas continued.
Israeli officials said the rocket interceptions prevented potential civilian casualties. Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Michael Leiter, described the attack as a serious violation of the understanding reached earlier this week.
In a separate incident, the Israeli military also reported intercepting an aerial target that crossed into Israeli airspace. Military officials believe the object was likely a drone launched by Hezbollah.
Meanwhile, Lebanese security sources reported that an Israeli strike targeted a vehicle near Beirut, though additional details about casualties or damage were not immediately available.
The situation remains highly tense as regional and international actors continue efforts to prevent a broader conflict in the Middle East.
