Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down following the national team’s early exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026, the German Football Association (DFB) announced.
Nagelsmann’s departure comes four days after Germany suffered a shock penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the knockout stage, ending their World Cup campaign earlier than expected. The 38-year-old had been under contract until the 2028 UEFA European Championship.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf thanked Nagelsmann for his commitment and professionalism since taking charge in September 2023, describing him as an ambitious, responsible and highly respected coach.
According to German newspaper Bild, Nagelsmann agreed to leave after a three-hour meeting with DFB officials in Frankfurt, where he was reportedly offered a severance package worth 7 million euros (about $8 million), equivalent to one year’s salary.
The DFB is expected to begin the search for a new head coach as Germany looks to rebuild following its disappointing World Cup campaign.
