As the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, several of football’s biggest veteran stars are preparing to defy age and extend their careers on the sport’s biggest stage.
Among them is Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who is expected to compete at the tournament at the age of 41. Argentina’s legendary captain Lionel Messi, who turns 39 this month, is also part of the group of ageing stars aiming to make history once again.
Other experienced players include Croatia’s midfield maestro Luka Modrić, who will be 40 during the tournament, and Bosnia and Herzegovina striker Edin Džeko, also continuing to perform at an elite level well into his late 30s.
In the United States squad, defender Tim Ream has been named captain and will enter the tournament as the oldest outfield player in US World Cup history at 38. He currently plays for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer.
Ream said he never initially expected to reach another World Cup after Qatar 2022 but chose to continue pushing his physical and mental limits in order to remain competitive at the highest level.
