A deadly fire at a hotel in New Delhi killed at least 21 people, including several foreign nationals, while dozens were rescued and taken to hospitals.
At least 21 people lost their lives after a massive fire broke out at a hotel building in New Delhi on Wednesday, according to local police authorities. Among the victims were several foreign nationals who had reportedly traveled to India for medical treatment.
Officials said the incident occurred in the Malviya Nagar area of south Delhi, where a restaurant operated on the ground floor while hotel rooms occupied the upper levels of the building. The neighborhood is known for its dense population and is home to many students, workers, and temporary residents.
Authorities confirmed that the victims included citizens from countries such as Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Liberia. Local media reports stated that many foreign visitors in the area often stay in affordable residential accommodations while receiving medical care in the Indian capital.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after the fire spread rapidly through the building. Eight fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, while rescue teams worked for hours to evacuate trapped occupants.
Police said more than 40 people were rescued from the building and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several individuals reportedly suffered serious burn injuries and smoke inhalation.
Television footage from the scene showed thick smoke and flames engulfing parts of the structure, with some people attempting desperate escapes from upper floors. Local residents also joined rescue efforts, helping injured victims reach safety before emergency crews arrived.
Delhi police described the incident as one of the city’s deadliest fire tragedies in recent years and said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started in the restaurant located on the ground floor of the building. Local administration official Jitendra Kumar told reporters that authorities suspect a connection between the restaurant operations and the fire outbreak.
Building fires remain a recurring concern in India due to overcrowded urban areas, poor enforcement of safety regulations, and inadequate firefighting systems in some structures.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and offered condolences to the families of the victims. He also wished a quick recovery for those injured in the incident.
