US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on countries that introduce digital services taxes targeting American technology companies, warning that such measures would override any existing trade agreements.
In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump said countries, particularly in Europe, considering digital taxes on US firms would face immediate trade retaliation.
He stated that any nation imposing a digital services tax on American companies would be hit with a 100 percent tariff on all goods exported to the United States.
The warning marks the latest move by the Trump administration to counter foreign efforts to regulate US technology giants. Trump has previously criticised overseas digital taxes and technology regulations, arguing they unfairly discriminate against American companies.
During his second term, Trump has strengthened ties with the US technology industry by promising fewer domestic regulations and increased support for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
The European Union recently reached a trade agreement with the US that capped tariffs on most European goods at 15 percent, but the deal did not address digital services taxes. Trump has since accused the EU of failing to honour the agreement and set July 4 as the deadline for a revised trade deal.
In his latest statement, Trump warned that any retaliatory tariff linked to digital taxes would take immediate effect and would supersede all previous agreements, whether signed or still under negotiation.
