At least five people were killed in Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon shortly after reports of a new de-escalation agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
At least five people have reportedly been killed in a series of Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese state media, only hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced efforts to reduce tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that two Syrian workers died after an Israeli strike targeted a plant nursery in the town of Jebchit located in Nabatieh governorate.
Additional drone strikes reportedly targeted vehicles in the towns of Toul and Ansar, killing two more people. Another separate attack in Nabatieh reportedly killed a driver after a drone strike hit a car in the area.
The attacks came shortly after Trump announced that discussions had taken place with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives linked to Hezbollah regarding a possible de-escalation of hostilities.
According to statements from the Lebanese presidency, the proposed arrangement would involve Hezbollah halting attacks into Israel while Israeli forces would stop air raids on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The latest developments follow weeks of heightened military tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon have intensified in recent weeks, with heavy bombardments and troop movements raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military stated that its air defence systems intercepted two projectiles launched from Lebanon into northern Israel shortly after the de-escalation announcement.
Reports from Beirut suggest that the situation remains highly unstable despite diplomatic efforts. Hezbollah has not officially claimed responsibility for attacks across the Israeli border following Trump’s statement, though the group has continued to announce operations against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
Analysts say the ongoing exchanges highlight the fragile nature of the current ceasefire efforts, as both sides continue military activity while negotiations remain uncertain.
